BRASS HANDS AWARD

  In appreciation of his honesty, integrity, determination and hard work, this year’s “Brass Hands” award is presented to:

Bill Broadbear of the Manti-Lasal National Forest.

  The Brass Hands award was created to honor those individuals who have put forth extra effort while promoting responsible motorized recreation on public lands.  Each of the previous recipients have been avid motorized recreationists.  Bill is different from the previous recipients in a couple of ways.  First he is a federal land manager.  Second, he isn’t even a motorized recreationist.  

  Many OHV enthusiasts, from Utah and beyond, have enjoyed motorized recreation on the roads and trails that exist on the Manti-Lasal National Forest.  These trails in general, and the Arapeen OHV Trail in particular, are available for use because of Bill’s commitment to providing quality opportunities for motorized recreation.

  The fact that Bill himself isn’t a motorized recreationist adds even more to the amount of appreciation that we have for the work that he and his crew have accomplished.  As all of you who know Bill would expect, he will quickly share these accolades with the many Forest Service employees and volunteers who have worked side by side to designate, sign, develop and manage the Arapeen Trail System.  Bill is correct, it does take teamwork to accomplish such a huge undertaking.  So, this award also represents our appreciation to all who have participated in the many projects associated with motorized recreation on the Manti-Lasal Forest. 

  Teamwork is very important, but without quality leadership things just don’t get done.  And without quality leadership things don’t get done correctly.  We want to acknowledge the leadership that Bill has shown throughout the past few years and thank him for his persistence in the continued improvement of the Arapeen System. 

  So, with that, we would like to present Bill the “Brass Hands” award for 2003 and thank him for his excellent example of multiple use management of public land.
