2012
Hi all,
Just wanted to say Thank You for your support on National Trails Day, we ended up with 38 people there. It went very well and we were able to get a ton of work accomplished. For right now both the old and the new trails on South Fork of Little Deer Creek Tr. #252 will remain open, so it may be a little confusing for people. There is a great post about National Trails Day and the new trail alignment on www.utahmountainbiking.com including a map that shows the new alignment (Thanks Bruce for doing that!). We will also be working with URMB to get up temporary signs to help direct people. I hope you all enjoy the new section of trail. We will be closing the old route on the North side of the Cascade Springs Road #114 sometime later this summer.
Trail Updates:
· We will be reconstructing the Timpooneke Trailhead this summer. This will be a big impact as the trailhead will be totally closed for around a month. This work is tentatively scheduled for the 5th of August to the 5th of September. Please share this information, I will send more details about alternative locations for people to park, the closure area and overall parking/trail use regulations. This year it would be best to avoid either the Mount Timpanogos Trail or the Timpooneke Trail on Saturdays and Holidays as the parking situation will be worse than on a normal year during the construction period.
· They will also be doing work on the Silver Lake dam that is in the Lone Peak Wilderness, during this work there will be a closure on the Silver Lake Trail and the lake, work will most likely begin in August, again I will send more information as it is available. Due to this work happening this fall, Silver Lake will be kept at very low water levels, so it may be more of a pond this summer.
· Find out about fire regulations before heading out if you are going camping. As of this week there will be a state wide fire closure in effect.
Also, the summer season is in full swing in the canyon, the trails are getting very busy, so please pass on the reminder to ride in control and to be courteous to other user groups. Speed is one of the leading causes of trail conflicts and trail damage. We (thanks to the help of many volunteers and trail adoptee members), are making quick ground opening the trails, so we are excited that this year we should be able to get a bunch of heavy maintenance done.

Hi all,
Trail updates for this weekend:
We will be opening Mill Canyon #040, Tibble Fork #041, and Mud Springs #173 tomorrow the 22nd of July. Thank you to all of those that adhered to the closure order. Please be aware that sections of these trails are still very wet, if you feel like you are causing damage being on the trail, please turn around and find another place to ride. Mill Canyon recieved substantial damage this year, as did sections of the other trails. We will not be doing any work to try and fix the damage until the damage ceases on these trails, in the mean time they may be difficult to impossible to ride.
We cleared the Ridge Trail #157 from Pole Line Pass to Mill Canyon Tr. #040, however, the section from Forest Lake Trail #171 to the Old Trench Trail #181 still has major snow fields, on the very steep and exposed side hill above Forest Lake.
East Ridge Tr. # 038 we have had reports of a ton of trees down, we will get there...but right now it would not be rideable.
The Silver Lake Trail #036 is snow free to the lake now, the river crossings are still running high and may be difficult to cross, there is still ice in the lake. Please keep in mind that there is a year around fire closure in the Silver Lake basin.
Timpanogos Trails
Mount Timpanogos Tr #052:
First and Second Falls continue to melt out. Portions of the stream are still under snow and thus dangerous. Hikers should stay on the trail for greater safety. Above the falls, the trail is clear up to Primrose Cirque. The trail above Primrose is only intermittently present. The Upper Basins are still snow packed. Emerald Lake is frozen over with only the top half (4-5 feet of snow present on the ground) of the shelter visible. The trail from Emerald Lake to the Saddle is very dangerous as you must cross above the Cliff band on the Southeast lip of Timpanogos Basin. The snowfield toward the Saddle is still very steep. Snow is not found from the Saddle to the Summitt.
(Listed again from last week) A section of the original trail (only minutes from the trailhead) is permanently closed due to flood/stream damage. You cannot cross the stream from this older section. Hikers can still use the 2nd trail which has a steam bridge crossing. The trail is marked. The original section of trail is blocked off by a barrier of trees/branches.
Timpooneke TR#053
The trail has only intermittent snow up to the top of the 2nd Plateau. Large camping sections are now snowfree at the 1st and 2nd plateaus. Scout Falls is snow free. The trail is mostly covered as you begin climbing the Giant Staircase. The Upper Basins are still snow packed. Emerald Lake is frozen over with only the top half of the shelter visible. The trail from Emerald Lake to the Saddle is very dangerous as you must cross above the Cliff band on the Southeast lip of Timpanogos Basin. If hikers slide down the Glacier and return via Timpooneke, this cliffband must be crossed. The snowfield toward the Saddle is still very steep/icy. Snow is not found from the Saddle to the Summitt.
We recommend all unexperienced hikers to turn back at the snowline. Hiking boots, crampons, and an ice axe are recommend for any snow travel. It is more dangerous when you leave the trail. Streams are flowing strongly under the snowfields. We believe much of the current midlevel snow will be gone by the end of the month. Snow will likely linger in the upper basins for much of the summer.
Road Updates: The Timpooneke Road and the Squaw Peak Road are both open now. The Schaffer Fork Road to Forest Lake is still closed.
General Advisories:
Thanks for sharing the word and for the education efforts that so many of you do on your own time, it is greatly appreciated.

- The rivers in the canyon are still running very high, river crossings are dangerous and should be avoided.
- Please ride with good trail courtesy principles, everyone waited a long time to access the trails this year, and it may be a short season, so expect to see more people on the trails right now.
- Ride with caution, major changes happened to many trails this winter and are continuing to happen with the high water and unstable soil.
Thanks for sharing the word and for the education efforts that so many of you do on your own time, it is greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
Trails update as of 7/8/2011
There are still three trails under the wet trail closure in American Fork Canyon (Citations Are Being Issued):
• Mill Canyon Trail #040 (Mill Canyon has suffered significant damage from use occurring during this closure, please stay off the this trail. Also,we have been seeing an increase in people cutting the switchbacks at the top of the trail, please stay on the trail once it is opened)
• Tibble Fork Trail #041(Tibble has also suffered damage from early use. The bottom of the trail looks dry, but up higher it is still plenty wet!)
• Mud Springs Trail #173
Time frame for opening these trails, as soon as they are dry, contrary to one motorcyclist, we are not just, "Dragging our butts" to open these trails. The recent rain storms are not helping the wet conditions.
Other Trail Updates
• The Mount Timpanogos Trail #052 had some major damage caused by the river this week, hard to believe but the next picture was where the trail use to be, the trail was at the level of the trees, and looked like a graded gravel road in this stretch of the trail. The only way people will be able to do this hike is to take the trail to the right towards the bridge crossing and then up the trail instead of straight up the old trail to the stream crossing. This will remain the route for the Mount Timpanogos Trail, the damage caused is not repairable. The force of water is unbelievable. This will add congestion for the traffic coming down the Lame Horse Trail #055 so people riding down this trail should proceed slowly and with caution once that trail connects with the Mount Timpanogos Trail #052.
• The Silver Lake Trail #036 is hikeable, with a few snow drifts left. The biggest obstacle that remains is the highest river crossing. The lake is still 65% frozen over.
• The Ridge Trail #157 is open from Mill Canyon Tr. 040 to the Summit Trailhead. I had reports of large snow drifts North of Mill Canyon on 157 heading towards Pole line pass (on the section of trail above Forest Lake).
• All the other trail updates are the same as the last e-mail.
• The Schaffer Fork Road to Forest Lake is still closed, Timpooneke Road is closed due to an avalanche and the Squaw Peak Road is closed due to an avalanche and two road failures.
General Advisories:
• Please keep in mind that with these rain storms, that even open trails should be avoided until they are given time to dry out again.
• The rivers in the canyon are still running very high, river crossings are dangerous and should be avoided.
• Please ride with good trail courtesy principles, I have had an alarming number of calls coming in from last weekend from people stating that they are being chased off the trail by motorcyclists. Please share the word to SLOW DOWN!
• Ride with caution, major changes happened to many trails this winter and are continuing to happen with the high water and unstable soil.
• And while one downhill mountain biker felt like people causing trail damage would quote, "Give the trail crew something to do", I assure you that the trail crew has plenty to do on such a dynamic year...

Trail Condition/Closure Updates 2011:
American Fork Canyon Trail Closures still in place: As of today we still have the trail closure in effect. Last Saturday we opened Pine Hollow Trail #047. This week we will continue removing signs to open trails that are dry and have had the deadfall cleared.
Expected trails to be open by 7/1 include:
• Salamander Flat #150 (Had over 40 trees down over the trail)
• South Fork Little Deer Creek Trail #252 (Had 26 trees down from Ridge to Cascade Springs Road)
• Lame Horse Trail #055 (Had over 15 trees down)
• Ridge Trail #157 to South Fork Little Deer Creek Trail #252 intersection
• Willow Hollow Trail #159 (Suffered erosion damage from high water)
• Ridge Connector Trail #216
Trails that are expected to remain closed until they can dry/more work can be done:
• Tibble Fork Trail #041(Please stay off this trail. It is still very wet, and there are trees down. Yesterday we worked part of this trail, unfortunately people have been riding this already and there has been some substantial trail damage)
• Mill Canyon Trail #040 (There have been reports of over 80 trees down...)
• Mud Springs #173
• Ridge Trail #157 north of South Fork Little Deer Creek #252 trail intersection
Please pass on the word that we really appreciate the adherence to the closure. We only had a few people using the trails when they were closed. On a year like this it was so important. Having said that as you start to hit the trails expect to see some trail damage, increased erosion in places will make some trails like Willow Hollow #159 difficult to ride with a mountain bike, many of the signs and fences have been damaged, rocks and other debris may have come down onto these trails.
Trails we have not been on completely, on all of these trails, and those not listed expect trees to be down and snow banks/avalanches or other trail damage that may make the trail impassible:
• Bear Canyon #179 we only made it up about a mile to the snow line (we cut out over 15 trees, many with the entire root wad in the trail, have had reports of many more trees down...)
• Timpooneke-Chris Flat Trail #151 we have not been on at all yet
• Lone Peak Wilderness Trails we have only been a short distance up Deer-Creek Dry Creek #043 from the Alpine side to the snow line, Box Elder Trail #044 and the AF side of Deer-Creek Dry Creek we have had report of a bunch of trees down...these will have to be cut out with a cross cut...
• Silver Lake #036-the trail is clear of snow up to the last 1/4 mile before the lake. Silver Lake is still 95% frozen over. The river crossings are running high, and previous logs that had been put in place were knocked out so crossing these will dangerous until the river goes down.
• Stewart Falls #056-Only a small amount of snow still is present just before the Falls themselves. The Falls are flowing very strongly. There may still be a few trees we haven't made it to closer to the falls.
Mount Timpanogos Trails: Usually we start doing parking on the last Saturday in June at Timpooneke, due to the high use. This year we are probably a good month or more behind the normal conditions to be hiking Timpanogos- Please distribute this information widely:
• Timpooneke #053 – Snow begins at the top of the first meadow (half a mile) and is intermittent up to just below Scout Falls. You can see the falls but you cannot yet reach the observation turn-off. Snow is again intermittent above the falls up to the first plateau ( 2 miles) which is still mostly snow covered. The trail is often hard to follow due to the snow. The shelter at Emerald Lake has only the top of the chimney sticking out of the snow (14 feet deep still).
• Mount Timpanogos #052 – First Falls is still completely covered by snow. 2nd Falls is only open at the top of fall. Hikers are always safer when on the trail area. They should stay off the snowfields and away from all water falls. Above the fall area, snow intermittently covers the trail. Some of the higher trail sections are melted out up to the bottom of Primrose Cirque. The trail is completely covered beyond that point (about 3 miles). The lower trail is still very wet from run-off flowing down the trail itself.
• All streams are running fast and cold and are very dangerous. Hidden moats are present from the streams flowing beneath the snowfields. Conditions will continue to be dangerous until the snow is gone. Most hikers should turn back when they hit the snow.
Depending on how things warm up, the higher elevation trails may remain impassible due to snow until the end of July...

Cheryl Butler

Here is the rundown for NPLD on the 25th of September. Everyone will be meeting at the Tibble Fork Parking Lot at 8:00 AM. It is mandatory that everyone meet there that morning for the Safety Meeting and sign in process. The duration of the projects will go until 12 or 1 PM. There will be 4 Projects taking place: Project #1: Forest Lake: Repairing and rebuilding fence, replacing map, and cutting up old fence and stacking for firewood and hauling out fence peices with spikes. Project #2: Mary Ellens Gulch: Signing. Putting up carsonites to help trail users know which is the correct route. Litter pick up. Project #3: Mineral Basin: Signing with carsonites. Junking up illegal routes to discourage users from traveling on routes that should not be used. Possibly some work up Graveyard Flat to help keep users from driving over Graveyard Flat. Project #4: This project was specifically planned for trail riders, although anyone can do it. We will be focusing on the Ridge Trail doing general trail maintenance, such as tread work, removing birm, and getting out root stumps in the trail.
I would recommend the Ridge Trail Project for your group. If any are interested in doing any of the other projects that is great as well! Keep in mind that if you do not have a rig to get up into these places, we will put you with others that do. Also, keep in mind that I am not sure how many empty spots there will be. The Ridge Trail project can be ride in or hike in. Forest Service personnel will be hiking in, so if there are those that want to hike in that works too. There are certain requirements for the day of the project to ensure a safe and productive project day! Required Clothing: Long pants, closed toe sturdy shoes, gloves if you have them. We will have extra gloves but you will probably be more comfortable in your own. Dress according the weather, and be prepared for all kinds of weather. Bring adequate water and snacks to sustain you for the duration of the project. I really look forward to working with all of you! We appreciate your service and willingness to make a difference on your National Public Lands! Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Forest Service. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me anytime. Thanks again, Kalyn Laycock Assistant Volunteer Coordinator Pleasant Grove Ranger District 801-342-5280

Where: American Fork Canyon, South Fork Little Deer Creek Trail #252. Meet and park at Elk Camp (some know it as Mexican Flat). This is where #252 crosses the Cascade Springs Road about 1.5 miles down from the intersection with the Alpine Loop Road.
What: We will be rerouting a small section of trail beginning about 200 yards up (south) from the parking area The reroute will end up being about 30-40 yards long and will include a small wooden bridge or puncheon.
Why: During the spring and into July, a small rivulet crosses the trail and has created a large mud hole. As trail users have tried avoiding the mud the trail crossing keeps getting wider and deeper. The rivulet parallels the trail above the crossing and overflows during the spring contributing to the problem. The reroute will move the trail up the slope and away from the drainage area.
What to bring: Tools will be provided by the Forest Service. Bring work gloves, food and water. Mosquito repellent is recommended. Wear long pants and closed-toed shoes/boots. A hat is also recommended.
This is not going to be a difficult job and is close to the parking area. We will mostly be cutting/clearing the new trail. We would appreciate your help. Please post or pm me any questions you may have.
Thanks!
Steve, URMB

Tibble Fork trail is open. If there's a sign still there it was left in error.
Also, There is a new bridge, crossing the river above Tibble Fork reservoir, just upstream from where Mill Canyon comes out. The Forest Service would like us (mtn. bikers and motos) to start using it instead of blasting through the river. If you're headed down Mill Canyon, when you get to the bottom, you'll see the new trail take off to the right. Follow that for a couple hundred yards and you'll come to the bridge.
Happy trails!
